Nestled
in the heart of the Canadian Rockies in the scenic town of
Canmore, Alberta, the 'Mine Director's Cabin' is a
reminder of a rich historic past. The enduring log
building stands proudly beside the Bow River, just as it has
for almost 100 years. It is surrounded on all sides by a
panorama of the majestic Rocky Mountains. The cabin is
within walking distance of downtown Canmore. Enjoy the
shops, restaurants, and beautiful views in the town.
Banff and an abundance of ski resorts are just a short drive
away.
A Brief
History
The large log cabin has
been known by many names.... the Shareholders Cabin, the
Executive Cabin, Luna Lodge, and the Mine Director's Cabin are
just a few. The Canadian Anthracite Coal Company, later
known as Canmore Coal Company, began construction in
1910. Its main purpose was to provide suitable
accommodation for the company shareholders when they came to
Canmore to attend the Annual General Meeting. Build out
of logs from the area, records show that construction was
completed in 1914. The cabin is symbolic of
the history of coal mining in the Bow Valley. It is a
tribute to and a reminder of the men and women who lived and
worked in the area, helping Canmore become the vibrant
community it is today. With the exception of the porch
being altered to add an expansive upper balcony, the
exterior remains almost exactly
as when it was first built. Over the years it suffered
from aging and was in need of major restorative work. In
the year 2000 the historic building was sold to a group of
investors who appreciated its historic value and see
themselves as stewards of an important piece of
heritage. The socially conscious owners have financed
extensive restorations and the building has been saved from
further destruction and deterioration. The impressive
log building will remain an historic Canmore landmark. |
